The ultimate midsummer bucket list

If the realisation that we’re already midway through July fills you with a slight sense of panic, you’re definitely not alone.

Here at The Know HQ, we’re trying not to lament the fact that the longest day of the year is already behind us. Instead, we’re reminding ourselves that there are still so many warm and sunny days on the horizon - and even more sweet ways to spend them!

So, without further ado, here are 10 simple and inexpensive ways to load up on seasonal fun.

1. Catch a film outdoors

Arguably the ultimate summer bucket-list item, which also brings with it a hefty dose of nostalgia. Here’s a useful list of open-air screenings around the UK - or invest in a portable projector to host movie nights from the comfort of your own home (or garden).

2. Go wild swimming

Use this website to find local lakes, ponds and rivers for a refreshing dip. Prefer your outdoor swimming to be a little more chlorinated? Here’s a list of all the lidos and outdoor pools in the UK.

3. Head to the coast for the day

If you don’t have a car, hire one for the day -  Hiyacar and Turo are great options - or even better, hop on a train.

If you’re based in London, take the train to Brighton for an excellent day out - or, if you’re living outside the capital, check out this guide to the best beaches closest to the UK’s biggest cities.

4. Host an outdoor lunch

This may be one of the more obvious bucket list items - but it is so worth doing. Definitely don’t feel pressure to cook a three-course feast every time you have people over - Meera Sodha’s tomato and coconut curry is a quick and easy crowd-pleaser. (Bonus points for rushing to eat outside literally every time the sun shines this summer - even when it’s kind of cold!)

5. Choose one decadent meal and learn to cook it

This will feel like a creative project, a self-care activity and a delicious sensory experience all in one. Lily, our resident foodie, loves Ixta Belfrage’s prawn lasagne with habanero oil.

6. Be a tourist in your own city

Plan out a long walk through your town or city, making a stop at any stores or cafés you’ve been meaning to check out along the way.

Extra points if you explore a neighbourhood you’ve never been to before - and extra extra points if you manage to join a free walking tour.

7. Finish your work day with a stroll

This is a low-stakes bucket list item that packs some seriously impressive results! A late afternoon walk in the sunshine is an immediate well-being boost, and something you’re guaranteed to miss once the 4pm December darkness rolls back around...

8. Read outside

Whether you’re lounging on a beach or lazing in a park, reading in the summer is somehow just better. Searching for your next novel? Check out our list of 15 brilliant books to lose yourself in this summer.

9. Check out a free exhibition

There are some excellent free museums and art galleries based around the UK - and not just in London, either! This exhaustive list is a must-read.

10. Switch up your movement routine

Use the warmer, sunnier and longer days to your advantage.

Ideas include bringing a yoga mat outside for an al fresco workout or trying out a YouTube dance class.
