Middlethorpe Hall & Spa, York: hotel review

Nestled in tranquil gardens and parkland on the edge of the beautiful city of York, Middlethorpe Hall & Spa offers a true escape from everyday life. My recent weekend stay left me utterly enchanted and rejuvenated, and every last detail far exceeded my already high expectations. From the opulent rooms to the delectable dining experiences, I wanted my weekend here to last forever.

Charming arrival and warm welcome

The moment I stepped through the doors of the grand 18th-century country house, all of my stress and worries seemed to melt away. The friendly and attentive staff at the reception desk made me feel instantly at home. This professionalism and courteousness continued throughout my stay, ensuring that every need was met promptly and with a genuine smile. Other guests commented on feeling like family here and, by the end of my stay, I very much felt the same.

Elegant rooms and beautiful gardens

Middlethorpe Hall is one of three properties making up the National Trust-owned Historic House Hotels group and it exudes character, with classic decor and period furniture blending seamlessly with modern amenities.

My room was a haven of comfort and understated luxury - the huge, four-poster bed was incredibly comfortable, ensuring a restful night's sleep, while the view out across the gardens made opening the curtains in the morning a real delight (especially when I was greeted by wild grazing deer!). The hotel’s extra attention to detail didn’t go unnoticed, from the plush bathrobes and slippers to the garden-grown fruit and sweet treats that were provided for me.

I took a wander out to enjoy the warm, summery evening as soon as I had the chance. Guests are able to take part in all sorts of activities on these 20 acres of land, including playing croquet on the lawn and strolling in awe around the immaculate walled kitchen garden (where you can admire the pumpkins!). I could have spent hours and hours here.

Culinary delights beyond compare

Middlethorpe Hall’s dining experiences were nothing short of spectacular. My evening began with a wonderful three-course candlelit dinner at the hotel’s award-winning restaurant. With an interesting seasonal menu and impressive wine list, I knew I was in for a treat, while the ambient dining room, elegant table settings and soft lighting added to the indulgence.

I started with an amuse-bouche and delicious home-baked bread with whipped butter, which set the tone for the rest of the meal. Watercress veloute with sea trout and caviar was a sophisticated and light way to start, followed by the most perfectly cooked fillet steak I’ve ever had, with shin pie, leeks and champ. The chocolate dessert was rich, decadent and moreish, and despite being completely full, I happily finished every last bite. It was the best meal I’ve had for as long as I can remember.

Breakfast each morning was equally wonderful, where guests can choose cooked classics from an a la carte menu and self-serving pastries and fruit from a buffet.

To top off the weekend’s culinary delights, I enjoyed a fabulous afternoon tea - a quintessential English experience enhanced by the country house setting of the hotel. The tiered selection of delicate finger sandwiches, freshly baked scones and assortment of sweet treats was as visually pleasing as it was delicious. Again, the service was second to none.

Relaxation and rejuvenation at the spa

The spa at Middlethorpe Hall - which can be accessed by all overnight guests - is a real sanctuary. The facilities are top-notch, featuring a heated pool, sauna, steam room and whirlpool, and a small but well-equipped gym. A series of sun-loungers provide the perfect spot to read a book in the sunny garden. Treatments are available too, if you fancy some extra pampering - and even if you don’t have time to stay for the weekend, the spa can be booked and visited separately.

Prime location

While the hotel felt tranquil and remote, it was only two miles away from the centre of York, making it a short taxi, easy bus or even a walk away (on a nice day, if you pack light!). While you could easily spend the whole weekend at the hotel, York offers lots to do if you fancy venturing out, with charming, cobbled streets, countless characterful pubs and lots of great places to eat. I was shocked when I realised I could reach York from London in under two hours (on a direct train from King’s Cross), and wondered why I hadn’t done so before - it certainly won’t be my last visit!

A perfect weekend

Every aspect of my visit - from the attentive and considerate staff to the refined dining experiences and the serene spa - surpassed my expectations. This true gem seamlessly marries tradition with modern comforts, creating an unforgettable escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

I left feeling relaxed, rejuvenated and eager to return. If you're seeking a weekend retreat that promises the epitome of hospitality and indulgence, Middlethorpe Hall Hotel is an absolute must-visit!
